Smartphones Create Revenue For Your Business

A recent USA Today article talks about how to leverage cell phones to make sales.
"…mobile devices transform the way customers deal with small businesses…a lot of people looking at smartphones…are absolutely addicted to it…Everywhere I went with my nephews - 24-year-old Seth and 32-year-old Aaron - the first thing they did was whip out their smartphones. They checked in on FourSquare, posted on Facebook, tweeted on Twitter…At one restaurant, Seth…got a discount coupon on his phone. At yet another restaurant, Aaron ran his phone over a "QR" - Quick Response – code…pasted in the guest check folder to earn points toward a future meal or dessert…how can you get started with mobile marketing for your small business?..."Claim" your business on sites such as Yelp, Bing, Yahoo Local, Google Places, Foursquare…Give coupons and deals…Build relationships with customers…through social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Many people, especially younger consumers, check these on their phones continually. Posting once a day or a few times a week keeps your name in front of them…"
Look around your business at different times during the day. Do you see customers using smartphones for things other than just making calls? If you do, you should consider how to take advantage of that customer behavior to generate more sales for your business.

Two local businesses especially likely to be able to drive more sales through onsite interaction with smartphones are bars and restaurants. Their customers tend to be relaxed, enjoying themselves and not in a big hurry. They have their smartphones out texting friends and checking Facebook.

These customers are already in a buying mood, having come to purchase a meal or beverages. If you make it easy and appealing for them to spend more money on your products, they probably will. And at some point during their stay in your establishment, they might be a bit bored. Maybe while they wait for their food or are leisurely drinking their beer. Think about three key points regarding these customers:

  • They have their smartphones out and are using them.
  • They are already buying something from you and are likely interested in special deals.
  • They might need something to amuse or interest them if they are waiting for service or friends.

If they have a table tent in front of them with a QR code on it, they are very likely to scan it with their smartphone. If the QR code leads them to a special offer or a list of specials, you will almost certainly get more sales than if that QR code was not there.

Trends For Mobile Computing in 2012

More customers are connecting to and spending money with local businesses through their smartphones.

That's one of the conclusions of industry statistics summarized by Google which was discussed in a recent post on ReadWriteWeb:
"...Google posted five trends to watch in mobile advertising that evolved in 2011 and will continue in the next couple of years…Google notes through its research that:
  • 79% of smartphone consumers use their phones to help with shopping, from comparing prices, to finding more product info, to locating a retailer.
  • 70% use their smartphones while in a store.
  • 77% have contacted a business via mobile, with 61% calling and 59% visiting the local business.
…users are now expecting to engage with local businesses though their mobile devices. Think about it: did you go to a local businesses mobile website this year? Did that business have an app or a website optimized for mobile?..."
The need for local businesses to have a mobile-optimized website is echoed in this article from PRC Technology News:
"...with smartphones and other mobile devices being widely used…and the number of users steadily growing…comes a corresponding growth in mobile internet browsing. Since 2009 mobile browsing has jumped from 0.7% of worldwide browsing activity to 7.1% by August 2011, a 1000% increase…mobile devices have become a staple in everyday living around the world. Now more than ever it’s important that websites be optimized for mobile devices. There is no doubt in my mind that, for a business to survive the future, it will need a mobile website..."
